Running training - FAQs
How far do you go?

It's not really about going out for an hour and just plodding the streets. Other than a bit of motivation, why would you need to pay someone to help you do that? The sessions are about training you to improve on what you already do - either to make you faster, make you go further, or to improve technique. You can simply use the sessions for weight loss or fitness if that's your thing too! The session is split into ten minute sections which focus on different aspects, so you might be doing some sprinting (or power walking!) one minute, and squats the next!
But, if you do have goals in mind this is fine too - see our photo of the running club finishers in Ely New Year's Eve 10k 2011 (all started as beginner runners that year). Programmes and distance sessions provided for free - just let me know what you're aiming for.

Can I really bring the kids?
Yes! Eva (6) is a 'regular' at our Over group and Lena (9) has been coming to our Cottenham group since it started. We also have occasional visiting kids when childcare falls through - these sessions can be arranged so that we're near a park if they don't want to join in running with mummy or daddy. Because of the way the sessions are structured, the kids don't 'get in the way' - you still work extra hard!
And dogs too?
We have five four-legged members at present! The sessions are planned to be off-road as much as possible, and we always use footpaths and pavements, so it's always safe. So, if you don't have time to walk the dog and go to the gym too, why not bring your furry friend to running club instead?
Am I too old/young/fat/skinny/fit/unfit?
The current group has a very wide range of ages, sizes and abilities! The sessions are carefully planned so that all abilities can work at their own level. You will never feel out-of-place - there are options for both fast and slow people and for varying levels of fitness. I genuinely believe that anyone can run!
If you're an experienced runner then don't be fooled that this is an 'easy' option - it's not simply going out for a run, it's as hard as you want to make it! We have a number of experienced runners (from 5k to marathon) that regularly attend the sessions to improve their times.

What do I get for my money?
The sessions are led by an experienced running coach, who will monitor your progress and ensure that the session is appropriate for you. This makes sure that you are doing both safe and effective training, which can be hard to monitor on your own! You'll get feedback on your progress, as well as hints and tips on everything from nutrition to flexibility, and can ask any specific questions you have about running or fitness in general. The sessions are registered with UK Athletics as part of the Run England scheme, which provides free membership for participants. All members get free technique analysis sessions, free programs and advice.
