Got chatting to someone in a sports shop today. Just general nonsense about the weather - you know the sort of thing. She asked if I was shopping for a friend - I said no, I was looking for some new kit for me. 'Oh, but you don't look like a runner'. I started telling her all about my injury (currently I have post-thrombotic syndrome after a DVT last year) and how I can't train anywhere near as much as before blah blah blah. But it got me thinking - what does a runner look like? If I think about my groups, we have all ages (8 to mid-60s). We have some skinny ones, we have some (ahem...) larger ones. We don't all wear hi-vis and the latest kit (though some do!). We don't all start our Garmins at the start of the session (though some do!). We have petite ladies, we have rugby players, we have office workers, we have pregnant ladies. We bring our dogs and kids along too. We have racing snakes, and we have the plodders. Some of us end up purple-faced and panting, some can do marathons and barely break a sweat....
I wonder how much new people are put off starting with a new group because they 'don't look like a runner'?
It's all about finding the right group. And now, maybe you've found it......
